This week’s rumor mill has been ruled by Romelu Lukaku thus far, with the prodigal son edging ever closer to a Chelsea return — possibly around £80-87m as per random Twitter ITKs, but maybe as high as £100m, which is Everton’s asking price — and snubbing Manchester United. That’s mostly just conjecture at this point based on much reading between the lines, but what seems certain is that Lukaku is on his way out of Everton having reached “an agreement” with a Premier League club set to play Champions League football next season.
Another sign that points towards Chelsea is the recent dwindling of rumors linking the Blues with Real Madrid striker Álvaro Morata, who was touted for most of the past few months as the alternative big-money striker signing. In fact, Morata has now moved on to the AC Milan and Manchester United rumor mills, with the latter supposedly making a €60m bid for him recently. These days however €60m is nowhere near the stratospheric fees top transfer targets are likely to fetch, and so Madrid knocked that back.
Not much difference these days between €90m and £80-90m, and chances are whatever one of them goes for, the other one will move for a very similar fee. (Assuming Madrid are willing to let Morata go and that Morata wants to leave in the first place, neither of which are a given.) The third name in the big striker sweepstakes of the summer is Torino’s Andrea Belotti, but for now, he’s just waiting in the wings for his turn in the rumor mill sun.
Meanwhile, the Costa chatter has died down as well, so maybe Chelsea will in fact enter the season with Costa and Lukaku on the books? Phwoarrrrrrrr... (Sorry, Michy.)
