Nemanja Matić to Manchester United continues to be a thing

If Bakayoko is the new Matić, what happens to the old Matić?

The latest round of Nemanja Matić rumors about a potential reunion with former boss José Mourinho may have started in the pages of some tabloid named after a celestial body, but they were treading on mostly safe ground since this has been a thing for at least the last three weeks if not longer. And it has continued to be a thing for much of this week, with recent reports in the Mail and the Manchester Evening News joining the conga line.

Given Chelsea’s reported, if fraught with delays interest in and promising negotiations with Tiemoué Bakayoko, Matić is the most obvious candidate to go and make way for the 22-year-old midfielder. The veteran, whom Mourinho brought back to Stamford Bridge in 2014, was linked strongly with an exit last summer, too, before Antonio Conte convinced him to stay. There have no hints lately of a similar effort at convincing this summer just yet and with Matić’s contract up in two years, there won’t be a better time than the present to cash in.

Previous rumors put the price at £40m, which would pay for most of Bakayoko already. That would really not be a bad deal at all...
