AS Monaco have taken Ligue 1 and the Champions League by storm this season, playing an incredible brand of goal-heavy football fired by their collection of sparkling young talent. One by one, just about every single one of those players has been linked with a big-money move away from the team; one of the latest to take his turn in the rumor mill is left back Benjamin Mendy, now subject of heavy interest from the top-six English clubs according to a report from Sky Sports.
The clearest interest seems to be from league leaders Chelsea, who are looking to add more options at left wing back, where Conte only has Marcos Alonso, and maybe Pedro currently. But there’s keen interest from Manchesters United and City, both of whom could use upgrades on the left flank, as well as Liverpool, who’ve been stuck playing James Milner as left back multiple times this season. There’s less obvious interest from Spurs, who were linked last summer when Mendy transferred from Marseille to Monaco, but are now happy with their options of Danny Rose and Ben Davies. And then there’s Arsenal, who are in a bit of turmoil, and thus Sky finds it difficult to gauge their interest.
The long and short of it is that Mendy’s in demand, just as most of Monaco teammates are, and we should expect Chelsea to be involved in most, if not all of these rumors on some level.
The 22-year-old’s preference is supposedly to move to a club that allows him to battle for domestic and continental glory, much like his current club. Chelsea certainly fit that bill, but so do many others.
