Chelsea and Arsenal in bidding war for AS Roma defender - report

With the pursuit of Leicester City's N'Golo Kanté nearing its end, Chelsea should now shift their focus onto bringing reinforcements in other areas of need. One of the names in consideration, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport is AS Roma defender Kostas Manolas, who's also a transfer target of Arsenal.

The Italian news outlet reports that both English clubs have offered contracts worth €4 million per-year for Manolas, more than doubling his current earnings at the Giallorossi. But the transfer fee remains a potential sticking point, thanks to the transfer arrangements of Manolas's move from Greek club Olympiakos to Roma, which require the Italian club to pay either €6.5 million or half of his next transfer fee - whichever is greater - to his former club if a move for Manolas is arranged before September 1st this year.

Rumours back in March claimed that Roma wanted €43.5 million for the player. Most recently, his agent Iannis Evangelopoulos confirmed that they rejected a new contract offered by the Serie A outfit.

Manolas might not have had a season as remarkable as Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly whilst playing in the same league, but he would certainly be an upgrade over our current healthy options at defence.
