Thibaut Courtois is leaving! Asmir Begovic is staying! Conte wants Courtois to stay! Begovic is unhappy! Courtois is a disgrace! Courtois is the future! We've heard just about every combination of rumors regarding the futures of our two main goalkeepers, and it's not even the end of April yet! (Though Silly Season has now officially begun, with the arrival of the annual Sergio Ramos rumor.)
In tandem with the rumors about our existing goalkeepers (spare a thought for Marco "future-Hilario" Amelia!), Chelsea are getting linked with new goalkeeper signings left, right, center. We have already been linked with the best English goalkeeper this weekend, The Sun running something about Fraser Forster, and, previously, the best young goalkeeping talent in Italy, AC Milan's surprising teenager Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Here are two more.
JACK BUTLAND
Butland reaped the benefits of Chelsea signing Asmir Begovic last summer, getting promoted to Stoke's first-choice goalkeeper in the process. Everything was going quite well for him; his performances good and consistent enough all season to get Hodgson's call for England. It was with the Three Lions over the last international break that the 23-year-old managed to fracture his ankle and end his season (and his Euro prospects) prematurely.
Chelsea had been linked with Butland in the past — another similarity with Begovic in that sense, who arrived about five years after first getting linked. The Butland rumors were especially heavy three years ago when we were not quite sure how things with Courtois, then on loan at Atlético Madrid, and Čech, then still first choice but facing the eventual prospect of a backup role, were going to pan out. Facing perhaps a similar situation now, Butland wouldn't be the worst shout despite the possibility of an odd recreation of Stoke City's goalkeeping arrangements of previous seasons. Which is perhaps why Butland would be silly to agree to a move at this point. (So, again, just like the last time.)
YEHVANN DIOUF
Just to snap out of the déjà vu — a lot of that going around lately — here's a random story from L'Equipe, which claims that Chelsea (and Marina Granovskaia, specifically) are looking to bring 16-year-old Yehvann Diouf into the fold from Troyes, who are solidly rock bottom of Ligue 1. Diouf, who doesn't even have a Wikipedia page, is supposedly training with the seniors, but has yet to make an appearance for either the senior or the reserves side. He'd clearly be one for the less immediate future, with a price tag (under £1m) to match.
