For the past few months, it has seemed inevitable that Jose Mourinho would eventually be taking over for Louis van Gaal at Manchester United. On Tuesday, Duncan Castles threw us an interesting curveball, indicating that United might not be the only English club with serious interest in his services.
According to Castles, who is generally quite accurate with all things Mourinho, the Portuguese was contacted by a third party early this month, asking if he'd have interest in taking over the North London side should they part ways with Wenger:
Mourinho was approached by a third party claiming to represent Arsenal at the beginning of this month, following successive losses to severely understrength Manchester United and Swansea City sides. The former Chelsea manager was asked if he would be interested in working at Arsenal should Wenger's position be made vacant, and to hold off on making a decision on other offers until May.
While United, their ownership, and their free spending way would almost certainly be more appealing to Mourinho, Arsenal almost certainly have a better squad at the moment, and their London location would have some serious appeal as well. It also wouldn't surprise me in the least if taking over for Wenger and finally winning something substantial just to taint his legacy was something tempting to Jose, as I'm sure that he'd love to take one more parting shot at the Frenchman as he's shoved off into the sunset.
Regardless, I have a hard time believing that Mourinho would wind up at Arsenal if the United job becomes available, as despite their respective places in the current table, the Manchester gig is probably far more appealing to the former Chelsea boss. Still, thinking of Wenger squirming about reports that his club would turn to Mourinho makes me all warm and fuzzy inside, even if the thought of Jose at Arsenal makes me ill.
