Matt Miazga having Chelsea medical ahead of Premier League move

It came as a bit of a surprise when Chelsea were suddenly linked to New York Red Bulls defender Matt Miazga, but it looks as if that move is very close to being completed. Sky Sports is reporting that the United States center back is having his Chelsea medical, ahead of a £3.5 million transfer deal which will see him join last season's champions.

While I'll admit I only casually follow the Red Bulls, I've seen enough of Miazga to be a little skeptical that he'd contribute anything to the first team right now. I'd have to think that the young American will eventually become a part of Chelsea's ever-growing loan army, though it's certainly possible that he spends the next few months in London, adapting to life in Europe, training with the first team, and having a great view of Chelsea's matches from the seat recently vacated by Papy Djilobodji.

Regardless, Miazga is a very highly regarded prospect from one of the fastest-growing football markets in the world, and is certainly worth the inexpensive flier the Blues are taking on him. If he works out and becomes a key player at Stamford Bridge, it would be awfully hard to complain about the minimal fee paid to sign him. If he doesn't? Well, Major League Soccer will probably still pay a premium to bring him back to the United States.
