Chelsea were rumored to be interested in Atletico Madrid center back/fullback Toby Alderweireld, but it looks as if the Blues might have to look elsewhere for defensive reinforcements. Nieuwsblad are reporting that Atletico have reached an agreement to transfer the player to a London side, but instead of Chelsea, that club is Tottenham Hotspur. The Belgian paper notes that the club still has to agree personal terms with Alderweireld, and as we've seen in the past (hello, Willian), other clubs can always step in and gazzump Daniel Levy while he's negotiating with the Alderwiereld.
While I liked Alderweireld as a versatile backup for Jose Mourinho's side, he certainly wasn't anywhere near the top of my wishlist for defensive reinforcement. I'm quite pleased to hear Chelsea linked to several youngsters with higher upside, instead, and will happily let Alderwiereld slip through our fingers, to pair up with Belgian teammate Jan Vertonghen at White Hart Lane. Now, let's just hope we actually sign one of those young defenders...
