Arda Turan could cost Chelsea an eye-watering sum

The summer transfer window is now officially open, so it's time to turn the Chelsea transfer rumors up to 11. Today, we've got more talk of Atletico Madrid winger Arda Turan, and The Daily Mail have been kind enough to give us some figures.

The Mail are claiming that the Blues have already offered £29 million for the Turkish 28-year old, a number that happens to match the buyout clause in his contract. Jose Mourinho's side are also rumored to be willing to pay the player a whopping £150,000 per week to lure him to Stamford Bridge.

The numbers mentioned would seem to call into question the legitimacy of this particular report, as far as I'm concerned. If the Blues were, in fact, offering to meet Atletico's buyout and make the player one of the highest paid members of the squad, the deal would already be wrapped up, and probably confirmed. More likely, this is simply the player's agent trying to drum up interest from other clubs, to get a transfer that Turan seems to want wrapped up sooner, rather than later.

That said, Turan does make some sense for Chelsea, if the numbers involved are reasonable. The Blues could use some depth on the wings, and Turan is one of the few names we've been linked to that would actually fit the system Chelsea used last season, and have the talent to push Willian for starting minutes. He wouldn't be the same sort of flashy move that Gareth Bale (not actually for sale) or Raheem Sterling (£££) would be, but he'd certainly strengthen the current squad, and be a useful piece for the next three or four seasons. Unfortunately, though, the numbers being thrown about by the Mail would give Turan a FFP figure similar to that of one Fernando Torres...
