The transfer deadline is a scary thing if you're obliged to cover Premier League football. While those in a more curmudgeonly frame of mind like to think of it as mostly sound and little fury, the truth is that we have to keep watching until the final minutes just in case anything does happen. If it really was guaranteed to be as dull as the grumps make it out to be, that'd be a lot easier on the writers, let alone the clubs.
But, thanks to new Premier League rules, everyone will get to go to bed a little earlier on Deadline Day. According to the Guardian, the league has moved the deadline up by five hours, from 11 pm to 6 pm, in order to accommodate the need to submit Champions League squads by midnight European time that night. It's as yet unclear whether this is a permanent change, but there doesn't seem much reason for there it not to be.
With the deadline set for September 1, I'd guess this makes August 31st a little busier as well. But we've got a lot of window to get through before we can start seriously thinking about that.
