The Telegraph are reporting that Chelsea have interest in another Atletico Madrid player, center back/fullback Toby Alderweireld, who spent the 2014/15 season on loan at Southampton. The player was impressive in his one season in the Premier League, and sounds like he'd prefer to remain in England if possible:
"I really want to go to a club that really wants me. There are three options - stay with Atlético, stay with Southampton or go to another club. So we will see what happens. Southampton gave me that opportunity and it paid off, I think. I’ve had a fantastic year, I can’t lie about that, so, yes, I’d like to stay in the Premier League."
Despite The Telegraph,s report of interest from the Blues, I think it's far more likely that the player winds up remaining with Southampton next season due to the £6.3 million option to buy included in his loan deal with the club. Given the fact the the Saints will be playing Europa League football next fall, they'd be beyond foolish not to activate the option and retain one of their most important players.
Still, Alderweireld is an interesting player to be linked to, as he'd be younger, versatile depth in defense that should come at a fairly reasonable price. Even if the Belgian doesn't appear to be the most likely addition due to that buyout option Southampton have, Chelsea should really be targeting a player like him as insurance against age/injury in the defensive ranks.
