Blues linked to Real Madrid superstar

International week is a bad time for club news. Forget scraping the bottom of the barrel -- it's now been sanded down so thoroughly that you can see through the damn thing, right into the terrifying inky chaos of the beyond. What lies below? Gareth Bale transfer stories.

That's right, the world's most expensive footballer has been recent subject to a barrage of rumours linking him to Chelsea Football Club. They've even begun appearing in the reputable-ish papers, but that probably shouldn't fool anyone -- this appears to have started in somewhere like the Express and has wormed its way up through the lower orders before popping up in the Telegraph. That's not the trajectory of a real transfer rumour.

What's happening here? As a guess, I'd say that after a pretty brutal season with Real Madrid, Bale's people are putting out feelers to the clubs that can afford him, and it's now common knowledge that Chelsea could drop an awful lot of money this summer if they chose to. Put the two together and you get a plausible-sounding, if under-sourced and vaguely fanciful rumour.

Might it happen? Sure. Chelsea have the cash, the will to get better and the motivation to troll Tottenham Hotspur, and it wouldn't be at all surprising if Real let him go. But there's nothing in the current set of whispers that should give us faith that this is any likelier.
