French defender confirms Chelsea interest, but will wait to decide his future

May kind of stunk, but June is starting well enough

Raphael Varane spoke to French television today, and was asked about the rumors of Chelsea having interest. He didn't deny them, though he did pour a good amount of cold water on the idea that he'll be changing clubs before the World Cup. Here's what he had to say:

"Chelsea have shown interest, but there is a World Cup ahead and we need to get ready for it"

What exactly does this mean? Who knows. Varane didn't play a whole lot this year due to a combination of injury and strong play from Pepe and Sergio Ramos. There's really no guarantee that he'd play a whole lot at Chelsea next season, as Gary Cahill and John Terry were every bit as good as the first choice pairing in Madrid.

Varane and Mourinho obviously have a good relationship, but to assume the Frenchman will agitate for a move because of that seems lazy. There's no doubt that every team in Europe will have interest if he's actually open to the idea of leaving Real Madrid, and Chelsea could well be the most enticing destination. At the moment though, there's probably no reason to think he'll actually be leaving.
