Chelsea have an offer on the table for Javier Zanetti, according to reports

The Argentine is out of contract at the end of the season, and the Blues supposedly have interest

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Chelsea have a contract offer on the table for 40-year old Javier Zanetti. The report suggests that Inter want the player to remain with the club in a coaching capacity next season, while Jose Mourinho would welcome the player on the pitch as he transitions to a coaching career.

On it's own, it's hard to see the logic behind this sort of move. Chelsea don't have any real need for Zanetti on the pitch anymore, and he'd probably be lucky to dress for a handful of games with the club. Forget his versatility or remarkable career, he's just not a good enough player anymore that he should even be making the Chelsea bench.

That said, Zanetti wouldn't be a bad guy to have around if he accepts that he might not ever play, as he's been a model professional throughout his lengthy career, and would seem to be a guy destined for a successful coaching career in the future. I'd be pretty excited to see the player start his coaching career with Mourinho, as he's clearly a guy the manager enjoyed working with at Inter.

Personally, I hope Di Marzio has some details wrong in his report. I'd love to see Zanetti start his coaching career with Chelsea next season, but I really don't want to see a roster spot wasted on someone so far past their prime.
