Report: Chelsea reject Fulham loan bid for Mark Schwarzer with Cech's future in doubt

Paul Gilham

Here's one from the Daily Mail for ya, which, if true, speaks volumes about how Chelsea are expecting the goalkeeping situation to resolve itself.  Spoiler alert:  the #1 shirt may be vacant soon.

Chelsea have turned down a bid from Fulham to take veteran keeper Mark Schwarzer back to Craven Cottage.

The Cottagers have enquired about taking the 42-year-old on an emergency loan until the end of the season but Jose Mourinho has rejected the bid.

As we know, Čech has recently sent a public warning that he's not content to just sit on the bench and as still one of the best goalkeepers in the world, his thinking is more than understandable.  To his credit, he's been an absolute model professional in handling his demotion to backup goalkeeper, and even seems to be on good personal and professional terms with his usurper.  We'd be tremendously lucky and privileged to roll with the greatest backup goalkeeper the world has ever known, but if Čech wants to leave in January, I doubt the club will throw up any roadblocks.

In fact, that's just the future for which we've been preparing our Schwarzer contingency plan since re-signing the backup goalkeeper in the summer.  Even though we had to leave the Australian veteran out of our Champions League squad -- and he has very little chance of getting any game time at the moment -- Chelsea's unwillingness to let him go back to Fulham on emergency loan means that we need to keep these contingency plans in effect through the January transfer window.
