The Telegraph is reporting that Manchester United are now closing in on a new deal with Wayne Rooney. Chelsea spent most of the summer chasing the portly Englishman, but United weren't willing to sell. Here's what the paper had to say on the matter:
Wayne Rooney is closing in on a new £300,000-a-week contract at Manchester United after deciding to end uncertainty over his future by abandoning plans to leave.
If true, Manchester United have most certainly lost their minds. Wayne Rooney is a very good football player, but paying over £15 million per year for a striker his age is insane. For Chelsea to come near that figure on top of a transfer fee would be stupid, and it's not hard to picture a situation where we'd find ourselves regretting that silly deal.
I've never really wanted to see the club chasing Rooney anyway, as he's just never going to be a good target in the FFP era. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that this report is true, and that we'll be in the market for younger, cheaper options in June.
