Naples radio station claims Cavani deal done

Paolo Bruno

Italian journalists tenuously linked with Napoli are claiming that 'reliable sources' have the Partenopei and Chelsea in agreement on Edinson Cavani. The cost is apparently €58 million with Cavani paid €8.5 million per season*, and before the deal is done Napoli will have to buy a new striker. Although this is interesting news, I'd take it with several grains of salt -- this isn't an official announcement or anything close.

*That's around £140,000 per week.

We've been misled repeatedly by either the Italian press or Napoli owner Aurelio de Laurentiis repeatedly over the course of this pursuit, and I'm not ready to declare this a done deal on the back of a 'reliable source', especially not after de Laurentiis denied that he'd even been talking to the Blues over Cavani. But it's definitely a situation to keep an eye on.

Regarding finances should this report prove accurate -- although the cost is a little below the reported buyout clause of €63 million (although it's been put at €58 million elsewhere), as with Ezequiel Lavezzi bonuses will almost certainly take it up to the full value. Cavani would therefore cost about £18 million per season on a five year deal, essentially equivalent to the Fernando Torres deal. Which is a lot of money. Hopefully this one goes better, if it happens at all.
