Nemanja Matic would prefer to remain at Benfica for another season

The Serbian midfielder would like to return to the Premier League in the future, but for the moment, he'd like to stay in Lisbon

We keep hearing this rumor that Chelsea are looking to bring back Nemanja Matic from his two-year hiatus in Portugal, and I just don't know what to make of it. I was never a big fan of including the Serbian midfielder in the deal for David Luiz several seasons ago, but I'm not so sure spending ridiculous money to undo that mistake is the wisest course of action either.

Luckily for those of us who think spending huge on him might be a bit hasty, Matic had some comments today to throw a bit of cold water on the idea that he might be returning to London this summer:

"Frankly, I'd love to stay in Lisbon for another season. Of course I am struck by the fact that someone like Jose Mourinho wants me back in London, and there is a motive to prove I can still play in the Premier League."

"But I have not told you what I have in Lisbon. I hope next season we have more luck in matches that bring us trophies. After all, the Champions League final (next season) will be played at our Stadium of Light. Why not end at home the curse that has chased the club for 50 years?"

Aside from the fact that Benfica don't have a snowball's chance in hell of making it to the Champions League final next season, this sounds like a reasonable thing for Matic to say at this point. Benfica have really given him a shot, Lisbon is supposedly a lovely place to live, and he'll likely increase his paycheck that much more when he does eventually move on with another excellent season in Liga Sagres.

I like Matic, I really do. He's not going to provide a whole lot that we don't already have in the midfield though, and I'm not overly upset that this rumor looks like it's never going to come to fruition. Feel free to stay in Portugal Nemanja, as I just feel there are better options out there to fill our current needs.
