Chelsea 4-0 Preston North End, Player Ratings: Malo Gusto delivers again

Community player ratings from Chelsea’s FA Cup third round victory

1. MALO GUSTO (7.5)

Second Man of the Match in our last three games for Gusto, who continues to impress on the left flank, where he seems to be just as comfortable as on the left.

While we expect wingers to be able to switch flanks readily, that’s a lot less common among full backs. And it’s pretty uncommon to see a player so comfortable on both flanks, and be able to contribute in a very similar fashion regardless of which foot is closer to the sideline: an absolutely perfect cross for our opening goal.

Gusto’s development has made Reece James’ absence a lot more bearable, and that’s perhaps as great a compliment as any.

2. THIAGO SILVA (7.4, sub)

When in doubt, vote Thiago Silva.

His headed goal, which bore a striking resemblance to Didier Drogba’s goal in Munich in 2012 (obviously different circumstances and stakes aside), was fantastic as well, and a bit ironic, too, given his recent interview with Brazilian television, where he talked about his distaste for aerial duels (despite being good at them).

(In fairness, a few years ago, just after joining Chelsea, Silva talked about how he would get headaches from the non-stop aerial duels, which probably isn’t a good thing...)

3. RAHEEM STERLING (7.3)

Sterling got to sit for a couple games — first a suspension then not being needed as we hung on for dear life against Luton — but he was back in this one, and back to some of his most impactful. In the first half especially he seemed to be the only one actually trying to make something happen proactively (if not all that successfully).

Sometimes, a bit of rest is all that’s needed!
