Christopher Nkunku could miss Chelsea’s ‘next few games’ with new hip injury

In Friday’s pre-match press conference, Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino revealed that Christopher Nkunku had been dealing with a slight knock in training during the week, but that the forward would still be available and be on the bench for Saturday’s FA Cup third round match against Preston North End.

But when that squad was announced, Nkunku was nowhere to be found. And unfortunately, that wasn’t just a precautionary move, as confirmed by the manager after the game.

“He wasn’t involved because he suffered after training yesterday a problem in his hip and we need to see if he can be ready for the next few games. That is the problem.”

That is indeed a problem.

We had been concerned about putting too much pressure on Nkunku, to single-handedly save the offense — even though we’ve been scoring at a steady rate as of late — but as it turns out, the biggest concern with him is a far more familiar and basic one. Just another day at Injuries FC.

Chelsea’s schedule is a bit lighter this month, but we do have the League Cup semifinal first leg coming up on Tuesday, and then a Premier League midtable showdown against Fulham next Saturday (then a 10-day break). Would’ve been nice to have Nkunku for those two games.
