It’s been likened to Mesut Özil’s goal for Arsenal against Ludogorets in the Champions League seven years ago. A wonderful touch past the goalkeeper, then sitting down two despairing defenders, before tapping in. The similarities are certainly there, if not in the exact moves but in the manner of scoring: the cool, calm, colledness and absolutely unerring confidence to pull it off in a match-situation.
That’s why they call him Cold Palmer, after all!
When the nominations came out, I did not see Palmer’s goal among them initially, and walked away believing that it was a grave oversight. Then again, the Goal of the Month award loves a long-range bomb (even if those already peaked with Michael Essien).
But now I see that Palmer’s goal against Luton Town was indeed nominated for Premier League Goal of the Month for December (in addition to Palmer being nominated for Player of the Month). And that’s great to see. And see over and over and over again.
