Luton Town 2-3 Chelsea, Player Ratings: That’s why they call him Cold Palmer

Community player ratings from Chelsea’s win to close out 2023

1. COLE PALMER (8.7)

There’s been a lot of angst about this win among the faithful, certainly from the more vocal ones, but the player ratings are the highest on average since the 4-4 draw against Manchester City. And it’s always easier to fix things when we’re winning.

Speaking of fixing things, we have failed to score in only 2 of the 17 games since Palmer made his first start. That’s not all just thanks to him — though this is now his 9th Man of the Match in that span — and we’re still quite wasteful and inconsistent overall, but we can generally squeeze out a goal or two even when we’re not playing too well.

But we can’t really accuse the team of not being clinical in this one, with Palmer leading the way.

“That’s why we call him Cold Palmer.”

-Noni Madueke, 2023

2. NONI MADUEKE (7.5)

Madueke’s finish for his goal in the first half was so good that he himself couldn’t replicate it when he tried it again in the second half. That said, that’s back-to-back games with a Premier League goal for Noni, who’s making the most of the (long overdue) opportunities he’s been given.

Keep it going!

3. ĐORĐE PETROVIĆ (7.5)

Petr-Čech-ović had practically nothing to do for 75 minutes, then was the busiest man on the planet for the next 15-20, finishing with four saves. Shades of that Édouard Mendy game against Brentford a couple years ago, when he was at the very apex of his powers.

DJ may have conceded twice, including from an unlucky rebound on an excellent parry, but he still made several crucial saves, including the one where he somehow got a fingertip to a point-blank header to deflect it onto the crossbar and out.
