Chelsea look to get back on track today after a disastrous second half showing in last weekend’s 4-1 defeat against Newcastle.

Even more so than the defeat itself, the manner of that defeat was disheartening to say the least, and not even Mauricio Pochettino was able to maintain his seemingly impervious veil of relentless positivity. The head coach laid into his young (and not so young) charges in post-match interviews, and admitted in Friday’s pre-match press conference that a hard week on the training ground full of hard truths and hard work followed all that.

So now it’s time to see what our response will be. Responding well to defeats and setbacks is an essential quality of any good team. Doing so against Brighton after all our entanglements via transfers and such over the past few years would be a nice bonus to all that.

Chelsea team news: Despite our generally improving injury situation, we’ve managed to get ourselves into a right ol’ muddle at the full back positions for this one. Marc Cucurella and Reece James are both suspended after picking up yellow cards last weekend: James two of them in fact to earn himself an early cold shower and a one-match suspension. Cucurella meanwhile got his fifth yellow of the season already to also earn a suspension — Chelsea lead the league with 44 yellows coming into this weekend.

With Ben Chilwell out long term and Malo Gusto struggling with a knee injury since the international break, we are facing the prospect of Levi Colwill and Axel Disasi deputizing in the wide defensive positions. While neither will be strangers to that task, neither will be ideal for it either.

On a more positive note, Christoper Nkunku has a chance to make the bench and perhaps even his competitive Chelsea debut after missing the last five months with an MCL injury. Roméo Lavia, Wesley Fofana, Trevoh Chalobah, and Carney Chukwuemeka (who seems to have vanished from sight and mind after almost making his comeback) remain out still.

Brighton & Hove Albion team news: Brighton followed their loss to us in the League Cup in late September with a four-match winless run, but have since turned that into a seven-match unbeaten run in all competitions — built less so on the supposed hipster footballing genius of their head coach, and more on a bit of defensive solidity: just five goals conceded, with three clean sheets. (And a relatively easy schedule in terms of opposition strength as well, in fairness.)

Since we last saw them, Brighton have also suffered quite a few major injuries, with the likes of Solly March, Julio Enciso, Danny Welbeck, Ansu Fati, Pervis Estupiñán, and Tariq Lamptey all out long-term, at least until the new year. João Pedro, who has scored their last three goals, has a slight knock, but should be okay to play; Adam Webster has not been so lucky and has been ruled out. Meanwhile, Lewis Dunk and Mahmoud Dahoud are suspended after recent red cards. (Dunk was in fact shown a rare straight red for dissent.)

Previously: A 1-0 win in the League Cup back in September stopped the bleeding against Brighton. We had gone winless in five straight against them before that, including losses in both meetings last season.
