Chelsea 2-1 Crystal Palace, Player Ratings: Malo Gusto, with great gusto

Community player ratings from Chelsea’s last-gasp win

1. MALO GUSTO (8.2)

Malo Gusto’s season, his first at Chelsea proper, has been of a bit of a stop-start affair, a bit like our season as a whole. He was pressed into action early after Reece James got hurt after the first game, and made a great impression with a couple assists against Luton Town. But then our results suffered, and Gusto’s playing time suffered as well, due to injuries and a harsh red card suspension.

But he seems to be back, and most importantly, back full healthy. And that showed in this one to great effect. Malo ruled the entire pitch, literally, playing right and left, front and back, and making an impact in each quadrant. Nothing was more emblematic of his dynamic play than setting up Misha Mudryk’s goal with a left-footed cross from the left flank ... while playing as the right back!

2. NONI MADUEKE (7.3, sub)

Madueke has been barely seen all season, again largely due to injuries. But his case also involved some oblique comments from Pochettino about effort and application and whatnot.

But after making a telling impact in this one, winning and converting a late penalty, Pochettino paid tribute to the young winger’s tenacity and determination. Let’s see more of that!

“I want all the players when they’re not involved [to] go against me. Of course, I like because from there we won the game. He scored the penalty, he got the penalty. We are not a charity, you know? We are a football club and you need to perform.

“Sometimes we need to be tough. I said we need to show the reality, sometimes put [the player] in front of the mirror and say ‘come on,’ that is not the player that is going to perform.

“We have an amazing group of players, very nice people but they need to realise that this is about competing for Chelsea, not to compete in another club. It is about to win. It is about to lift trophies.”

“I like [his reaction to being out of the team] because it showed that he was upset with me and was disappointed with me because I didn’t play [him] too much, but also because he’s injured. But I think [Madueke said to himself] ‘now I’m going to show the coach that he can trust [in me]’.”
