Marc Cucurella’s ankle problem appears to be quite serious indeed, with the 25-year-old full back confirming on Instagram today (Saturday) that he’s undergone a medical procedure on the injury. He didn’t specify the exact nature of the procedure, but all indications would be that it was a surgery on the ligaments that he had injured in our defeat at Everton.
Chelsea’s official update on Cucurella at the start of the weekend revealed that he was “undergoing assessment and due to meet with foot and ankle specialists to decide next steps”. Evidently those next steps have had to be fairly drastic indeed. Neither Cucurella nor Chelsea have put a timeline on his expected recovery, but even the most optimistic reports are saying February, with about three months emerging as an early consensus.
(Could Reece James be next to go under the knife? Reportedly it’s an option that’s again being considered.)
With Cucurella joining James and Chilwell on the injury list, we’re down to one recognized full back, Malo Gusto, who has just returned from his own injury. Ian Maatsen would be another option, but he’s not recognized as such by Mauricio Pochettino for whatever reason, which likely means that Levi Colwill will continue to deputize on the left flank for the foreseeable future.
