Azpilicueta rues Chelsea’s uncharacteristic mistakes in Manchester City loss

Disappointing

Chelsea were not at our best today as defending champions Manchester City came to town, and put on a bit of a clinic, especially in the first half. While they needed a lucky deflection to score the game’s only goal, they did look the more threatening and higher quality side on the day.

Meanwhile, our performance riddled with errors big and small, many of them quite uncharacteristic in possession and on the ball. We were unable to string together meaningful passes or moves for large portions of the game.

Captain Dave rued those mistakes after the game as he reflected on the outcome.

“We’re disappointed with the result. It was not our best performance. Especially in the first half it was hard to get out. We didn’t create chances and lost the ball too easily. After the goal we had a good reaction, but it was not enough to get something from the game.

“They were at their best level. We couldn’t keep the ball as we like to do. We made so many mistakes, ones that we normally don’t make.”

Despite our good start to the season, we remain very much a work in progress. We had yet to hit top level this season, but it’s still very early. Room to improve then.

“We are two great teams with great players and great ambition. Every game is different and every competition is different. We lost our chance to get three important points. Now we have to analyse what we didn’t do that well and move on to the next game. We didn’t lose the league today. If we’d have won we wouldn’t have won the league today either.”

I guess we’re not going to run away with the league then.
