‘Honestly, what else is there!?’: Tuchel looking for attitude at Chelsea above all else

Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard

Chelsea have the majority of the first-team now back in training, joining a large group of returning loanees, fringe players, and promising youth all trying to impress Thomas Tuchel for the season ahead.

So what does he look for? How can talented players separate themselves from other talented players? For Tuchel, it all comes down to one thing, attitude. Attitude to work, attitude to learn, attitude to execute. Attitude with a capital ‘A’.

“We always look for attitude. Honestly, what else is there!? I mean, we are full of talent, all of them, so we look for attitude. [Even with new signings] we look for attitude, and that bar is high because the team set the bar high. We set it together high, and this is from where we start. This is what we demand from ourselves.

“The way we approach things is to take care of the daily process: how we are together, when we are together, how do we train, when do we train, and how we live up to it. Do we [just] talk about it, or do we do it? And this team did it. And now a big, big part of our job is to forget the success and to start again. I demand that from the players and I demand it from myself.”

Even if Chelsea make no new major signings this summer — and at the moment, it’s looking like that will be the case — we certainly have more than enough players to fill out a squad, maybe even two. Could some of those fringe players earn a spot? All other circumstances and factors aside, with the right attitude, they might. Tuchel’s not making any promises, but he’s giving everyone his full attention.

“There are possibilities for all of us and this group deserves our full attention, and they get it. I don’t judge on where you come from or what your history is, or what you earn or what your status is. I’m in charge of this group so they get my 100 per cent. I give my everything, they give it back, they make me smile, I give even more, that makes them smile, they give even more [and] then you have to live up to your talent.

“These guys are full of talent and now it’s on us to push them to their highest level possible. Then we will decide is this in the moment good enough for us, does this help us, is it better for the player to go on loan or get sold. This comes as the last step in this give and take.”

Chelsea enter the season as Champions of Europe. But, like everyone else, we also start the season with zero points. Expectations, as ever, are high and probably higher than last season. We expect to improve, from within or from without, always. Last season’s glories belong in the museum. This season’s glories will be won on the pitch.

Tuchel’s certainly not one to rest on his laurels.

“When you feel you touched a lot of people, that’s the best thing you can do in football: to bring positive emotion, that’s the job done. [But] I’m not so much the reflective type. I’m more about what’s in front of us and try to live in the moment and think forward.”

That’s the winning attitude.
