ED.NOTE: CORAL
Hello, Brave Hilario-ites! This is your overlord speaking. Later this week, the powers that be are going to bless us from upon high with brand new commenting technology, called Coral, or as they might say “new comments”.
And there will be blood.
The good news is that the Coral of today is better than the Coral of twelve months ago, when it first rolled out on unsuspecting and unfortunate NFL sites at SB Nation. Most significantly, it understands the concept of unread comments. And it’s got notifications and plenty of bells and whistles, especially on the moderating side. (I’ve seen and played around with it, been talked at about it, and talked to the people involved in their creation.)
The bad news is that it’s not the same as the “old” comments, that is the comments right now. Beyond any superficial cosmetic changes, there is a significant and potentially massive paradigm shift in that it doesn’t load all the comments at once (this is by design), and there is no “z-key” functionality. This functionality may be added at some point in the future (wouldn’t hold my breath), but the piecemeal loading is unlikely to ever go away (again, it’s a design choice and arguably the primary reason for the “new” comments — i.e. server load).
Further details and more specific information coming at the start of the week.
It may feel like the end of the world, and it might be. But we shall persevere, right?
Carry on,
DP
