Arjen Robben may be mostly associated with Bayern Munich, but before his legendary decade in Bavaria, he roamed the wings and kept cutting inside onto his left foot at Stamford Bridge for three seasons as well, much to our delight.
He was part of some of the best Chelsea teams ever seen at the Bridge in fact, striking fear into the hearts of defenses at one end as we kept all the clean sheets at the other. In his three seasons at Chelsea, from 2004 to 2006, he won the league twice, won the League Cup twice, and added an FA Cup as well. Unfortunately, success eluded him and the team on the European stage.
Robben also had a two-year stint at Real Madrid in between his time at Chelsea and Bayern (before getting booted by the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo), and spent his early years at PSV and Groningen in the Netherlands. He came out of retirement last summer to return to Groningen for a brief 7-match and injury-filled spell, which has now prompted him to stop his “active footballing career”, probably for good.
