Just a couple hours after Thomas Tuchel’s two-year extension was announced, the club have announced the (expected) one-year extension to Thiago Silva’s contract as well. Unlike Tuchel’s, this option wasn’t predicated on winning the Champions League, but was rather an option agreed last summer when he signed as a free agent, which has now been picked up by the club.
Those are just technicalities however, and Silva has certainly earned his extension with his stellar play all season, helping transform a leaky backline into one of the most feared around Europe, especially once Tuchel took over.
“When we brought Thiago Silva in last summer, we knew we were adding a world-class player to the squad. Thiago has duly shown everyone at Chelsea his immense quality throughout this season, and he has had a huge influence on and off the pitch for us.
“We said when he signed that we hoped Thiago would add new trophies to his impressive list of honours, and he has done just that with our success in the Champions League this weekend. We now hope that he carries on in exactly the same fashion in the coming year.”

Having arrived on a free transfer, the 36-year-old legend of world football has certainly proved that age is but a number and hopefully he can keep going like that for at least one more season as we continue to build a team for long-term success.
