Our latest chance to win the Super Cup arrives this summer, when we take on Europa League-winners Villarreal in UEFA’s showpiece one-off pseudo-friendly, which is set to take place at Windsor Park in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on Wednesday, August 11.
This venue had been selected two years ago, but with the various adjustments that have had to be made due to the COVID-19 pandemic, that was apparently in some doubt. But today, UEFA have confirmed both the venue and the date, which is the midweek before the first weekend of the new 2021-22 Premier League season.
Chelsea last played in the Super Cup just a couple years ago, losing to Liverpool on penalties. The time before that, in 2013, we also lost on penalties, to Bayern Munich. The year before that, in 2012, we didn’t even make it to penalties, getting absolutely destroyed by Atlético Madrid and Radamel Falcao specifically. Our one and only win in this match was back in 1998, when we beat Real Madrid thanks to a late goal from Gus Poyet.
The Champions League-winning entrant has won this game in 7 of the last 8 editions, since the aforementioned Chelsea loss to Atlético.
UEFA has confirmed the 2021 Super Cup final will remain in Northern Ireland, following speculation it would be moved to Istanbul.
