It was less than a day ago when we first got news of Norwich’s interest in Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour, with the Canaries making a bid to sign the promising player on a season-long loan deal. But it seems Norwich’s interest in Gilmour is far from a passing one.
According to a report from the Guardian, Norwich are close to signing Gilmour on a loan deal. The recently promoted team are the likeliest to beat other Premier League suitors such as Southampton and Newcastle United.
Despite almost always making a positive impact on the pitch whenever he had a chance, Gilmour found it hard to beat veteran competition from the likes of N’Golo Kanté, Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic to get more than 696 minutes of playing time at the first-team level. He wants a place where he can play regularly and manager Thomas Tuchel feels Norwich, which are guided by a former work colleague of his at Borussia Dortmund in Daniel Farke, have a playing style which will be a good fit to Gilmour.
On paper it seems like a really good arrangement for all parties involved. Norwich gets to add great quality to their midfield, Gilmour will have a much better shot at being a regular player since he will not have to beat some of the best midfielders in the world to do so, and Chelsea get to see a player with huge potential advance his own development at the Premier League level.
