Promising defender Malang Sarr left French club Nice at the end of his contract last season, and was scooped up opportunistically by Chelsea in August for free, explicitly with a view towards a loan and then a potential opportunity to make the team next season.
And so, Sarr joined FC Porto in September, where he’s had an ... okay ... season without ever really gaining the favor of head coach Sérgio Conceição. He did pick up some important minutes in the Champions League, including most notably when facing Juventus and Cristiano Ronaldo — before Porto would go on to be eliminated by Chelsea — but over a third of his 2109 minutes came for Porto’s B-team in the second division.
It should thus not come as a surprise that Porto are not even considering an extension of Sarr’s loan, as per Portuguese newspaper Record (via Sport Witness). Whether Sarr will actually get an opportunity to impress Tuchel & Co this summer is bit less obvious of an outcome, despite the club’s stated intentions last summer.
