1. MATEO KOVAČIĆ (6.1)
In a surprise twist, this game didn’t break any player ratings records. Despite the shocking scoreline, it didn’t crash through the 4.0 floor like, say, last season’s 3-0 defeat at Sheffield United (one of just 7 games since 2012 to do so) and Jorginho’s individual performance came nowhere near close enough to Tiémoué Bakayoko’s legendary 1.4 against Watford three years ago.
It was still the worst-rated game of the season, obviously, though not by a lot compared to the last three losses of the Lampard Era, which featured more than it’s fair share of sub-5.0 team averages overall, over the course of its 18 months. That’s the habit we’re trying to kick now. This was a relapse; time to start again.
The overall rating was helped by a couple not-terrible performances, including Mateo Kovačić, who gave an average Mateo Kovačić performance, but that was still good enough when others faltered badly. (Not so) fun fact: Kovačić’ last four Man of the Match awards from these ratings have come in losses (Everton 1-3, Man Utd 0-2, Bayern 0-3).
2. CHRISTIAN PULISIC (6.0)
A bit of promise, one heads-up play, a few heads-down plays, and another injury. Christian Pulisic’s time thus far at Chelsea summed up in 45 minutes.
3. MASON MOUNT (5.8, sub)
Hopefully Mount’s truly over his international break knock, because he’s unlikely to be rested again for the foreseeable future.
Incidentally, this top three from this most terrible match consists of last year’s Chelsea Player of the Year, last year’s WAGNH Chelsea Player of the Year, and this year’s most likely Chelsea Player of the Year. As House of Pain once said, cream of the crop rise to the top.
