It’s a good thing Timo Werner recently broke his goalscoring drought for Chelsea, otherwise we might look at this miss as yet another example of the poor man just simply unable to buy a goal. In this case, he only had the entire empty net to shoot at, only to somehow manage to contrive to bundle the ball wide. Are we sure this is the same man who had lit up the Bundesliga over the past couple years?
Werner’s had rather incredible luck this season, and almost none of it good.
He’s led the Premier League in woodworks hit for much of the season, he’s had more than one goal chalked off for hilariously miniscule offsides, and he’s also managed an entire highlight reel’s worth of incredible misses. And we still have two months left to go! Clearly, he’s destined to score a la Fernando Torres in the Champions League later.
Oh, as far as the game itself was concerned, Germany would end up conceding a late goal to lose 2-1 to North Macedonia. Both Antonio Rüdiger and Kai Havertz started, and they’ve certainly been busy this international break.
Another man with barely any rest over the past ten days has been Mason Mount, who started again for England despite needing some extra medical attention in training early this week. Ben Chilwell also started as England beat a Robert Lewandowski-less Poland, 2-1. Reece James had a late came off the bench as well.
Others collecting caps on the final day of this busy international break included Andreas Christensen (another clean sheet for Denmark), Emerson (Italy beating Lithuania, 2-0), Olivier Giroud (played the last half hour in France’s 1-0 win over Bosnia & Herzegovina), and Armando Broja, who played a half for Albania in their 2-0 win over San Marino.
And now, back to proper football.
