Highly promising young defender Xavier Mbuyamba was one of the more under-the-radar signings for Chelsea last summer, despite being a perfect juxtaposition of physicality and technique. And unfortunately, he’s remained very much under said radar. In fact, the 19-year-old has yet to play for any Chelsea team, youth or senior.
That’s because Mbuyamba suffered a knee injury just after signing for the club, and while he had began training with the team in January, he has since suffered a setback. As he revealed on social media yesterday, he’s had another, albeit smaller, operation — it’s not uncommon to have to have follow-up procedures to clean things up after major knee operations — and will therefore be out for some more time.
Unfortunately things don't always go as planned. 3 weeks ago I had another operation, not as big as the first one but I will be out for a bit longer. Its very frustrating but I have to be patient, the key is to keep working hard and stay strong so the comeback will be big pic.twitter.com/1mLJhRZL8K— xavier mbuyamba (@XMbuyamba) February 22, 2021
Mbuyamba is only likely to return towards the end of the season, if he does return this season at all, which makes this a bit of a wasted year for him. Fortunately, he is only at the advent of his career, so he should be able to recover completely and go on to show his qualities for the club.
Make the comeback big indeed, Xavier!
