So, still no Thiago Silva as the rest of Chelsea take to the skies and travel down to Spain Romania to take on Atlético Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16. The Blues have not made it past this round since 2013-14, when Mourinho Mk.II’s Blues lost to Atlético in the semifinals. That was seven years ago, though it feels a lot longer than that.

In any case, if we want to make it any further in this competition, a good first leg result will be crucial. Atlético may not be playing in their home stadium, but this is still their home leg, which makes away goals just as important as before.

And it’s at that end of the pitch that Chelsea have been struggling, having yet to score more than 2 goals in any Tuchel game, and generally not creating too many goalscoring opportunities. Plenty of threat, not as much cutting edge as we’d like. Could Christian Pulisic or Kai Havertz help in that regard? In theory, they most certainly could. In practice...

Choose wisely.
