LIVE BLOG

90+3min: FULL TIME. Chelsea win!

90+2min: Chelsea with some slick passing in the final third, central, but Kanté leaves one in on Lewis and that’s about that for the game.

90min: Three minutes added on as Chelsea more than happy to see this out at 2-0 since half-time.

88min: Newcastle long throw towards Carroll. Alonso heads clear for a corner. Giroud and Carroll battle for it, with the latter falling down and claiming a foul. Referee gives it the other way.

86min: Carroll wins a free kick in decent crossing position. Newcastle play it quick however. Jorginho and Kanté alert enough to prevent any immediate danger. Chelsea deal with the corner well enough.

82min: Giroud down after a midair collision with Lascelles. Should be okay to carry on, which he does after a brief moment. At the other end, Joelinton flicks a ball on for Almirón, who fortunately hammers his shot well wide.

79min: Kanté finds James wide and drives at his man. Everyone expects a cross but he goes for the shot. Darlow hangs a leg behind to make the save. Carroll on for Newcastle afterwards.

76min: Hudson-Odoi drops a shoulder and wins a corner, which Hudson-Odoi takes, but it’s over the head of everyone. Lascelles stays down in the wake of that, and gets some treatment. James on for Hudson-Odoi meanwhile.

74min: Kepa called into action to scramble across, as Willock heads towards the far post from a cross. Lascelles heads the corner well over the bar.

71min: Alonso looks long for Werner. He’s ahead of Lascelles but can’t get the ball under control. Werner claims a push from Lascelles, but the referees are unmoved. Replays show that Werner indeed had a case.

70min: Mount plays wide to CHO, who loses his man and puts a fantastic ball across the six-yard box. No one attacks it however, and it goes through harmlessly. Kanté on to replace Mount in the wake of that action as we switch to a 3-5-2.

69min: Alonso and Werner combine again, with the latter putting a cross back in for the former. His downwards header is straight at the goalkeeper however.

67min: Alonso looks long for Mount; Clark just gets his head to it to prevent a 1-v-1.

65min: Hudson-Odoi drives the box, then drives a low hard cross-shot across the box. It pings around the box for a second before Newcastle put it out for a corner. Mount takes, Newcastle clear and try to counter. Mount tracks back excellently to win it back.

64min: Joelinton on for Gayle.

63min: Mount, Alonso, and Werner combine in the left channel, but the latter’s return ball is intercepted. Chelsea seem to be getting the upper hand again after Newcastle’s good start to the half.

61min: Kova gives the ball away in midfield. Shelvey spots Kepa off his line and tries to chip him from there, but Kepa easily recovers to catch the ball.

60min: Werner again beats his man out wide and puts in a great cross. It’s just over the head of Giroud but Newcastle can only clear as far as Alonso at the top of the box. He takes aim, but his low shot is blocked again. Kovačić picks up the loose ball and tries to find Hudson-Odoi on the far post, but the ball curls away from the Chelsea wing-back and out for a goal kick.

58min: Alonso goes for a long shot, blocked, but it spins to Hudson-Odoi. He passes up his shot again, laying it back for an arriving Kovačić. His first-time effort spins just over the bar however. Close, again.

55min: Chelsea threaten for the first time this half, with Hudson-Odoi running at his man and putting in a cross. It deflects slightly to take it away from Giroud. Mount plays the corner short, then gets it back from Alonso. A left-footed cross is powered across the box, but Darlow punches it out with a couple strong fists.

53min: Saint-Maximin beats Hudson-Odoi to the byline and gets his cross in. Willock arrives ahead of the near post and scuffs it well wide.

49min: Long ball towards Werner. He collects and tries to get past his man, who blocks him off. No call forthcoming from the referee, much to Werner’s chagrin.

48min: Jorginho wins a couple fouls in midfield as Chelsea try to deal with Newcastle’s new-found press and intensity.

47min: Chelsea give the ball away and Jorginho commits a foul, central, 30 yards out. Shelvey lines it up, but Kepa’s equal to it and holds on.

46min: Newcastle starting in a flash, pressing high and winning the ball off Azpilicueta. A long shot deflects, but Kepa’s able to adjust and gather.

SECOND HALF: No changes for either side, as Chelsea restart proceedings.

HALF-TIME: Solidly comfortable from the Blues. Two-nil and could be more.

45+3min: Newcastle push on the left as Chelsea switch off, but Hudson-Odoi chases back and prevents a corner. Chelsea eventually keep the ball long enough for the half-time whistle.

45+1min: Kovačić plays wide to Alonso in acres of space. But he can’t quite get past Krafth and has to settle for a corner. Mount takes the first, cleared for a second. Second also cleared and Newcaslte can counter but Azpi makes a fantastic interception. Chelsea counter from that and Mount is in the area, drops a shoulder and takes aim, but rolls his effort wide of the far post. Unlucky.

42min: Mount turns nicely then tries to curl one with his left. Doesn’t quite hit it correctly.

39min: GOALLLL!!! TIMOOOO!! Finally! Mount takes the corner, Giroud beaten at the near post, but the defender can only flick it on towards the far post, where Werner scrambles it over the line. VAR check for possible handball by Giroud, but eventually gives the goal. 2-0, CHELSEA!!

38min: Kovačić finds Mount who releases Hudson-Odoi. He passes up his shot to play on to the overlapping Azpilicueta. No space to shoot, but space to cross. Blocked for a corner.

36min: Hudson-Odoi miscues a switch. Collector’s item, that.

34min: Jorginho chips over the top for Mount. Darlow out to head clear a bit unnecessarily spectacularly. Hudson-Odoi collects but Darlow recovers. Chelsea keep possession and eventually Kovačić plays through to Werner making a run through the middle. His first-time effort is just over the bar. Unlucky again.

31min: GOALLLLL GIROOOOOOOUD!! Werner back on and immediately gets the ball. He drives the line and crosses again, low. Darlow palms it out but straight to Giroud near the penalty spot. And he makes no mistake to give Chelsea the lead! 1-0, CHELSEA!

28min: Almirón toys with Alonso, but he recovers to block for a corner. Rüdiger heads Shelvey’s take out for a second corner, from which Chelsea can counter. But Werner loses out to Lewis, and then gets smacked in the mouth to add injury to insult. He gets a bit of treatment on the touchline for the bloody lip.

26min: Chelsea build through the middle before Giroud swings a massive ball. Alonso finds it and heads it back across the area, where Werner stretches a leg, makes contact, but just barely misses the far post. Unlucky!

24min: Hudson-Odoi drives the area, but passes up a left-footed shot. Rolls it to Kovačić at the top of the box, but his first-time effort is blocked by a crowd.

21min: Giroud’s first action is to give the ball away, but Rüdiger stays strong on Willock. Chelsea look for Hudson-Odoi at the other end, but the ball is too strong and Lewis had tracked it well anyway.

19min: Abraham not going to be able to carry on. And we didn’t even get a VAR check. Giroud on for his 100th substitute appearance in the Premier League.

16min: Abraham able to carry on for now; Giroud warming up just in case.

14min: Great pass from Kovačić, Abraham gets to it, but he’s tackled by Lascelles from behind. He gets the ball with the desperate last-ditch challenge, but also traps Abraham’s ankle under his leg. Tammy’s down to gets some treatment. Apparently not a foul.

13min: Hudson-Odoi looking low across the box, blocked for a corner. Mount takes, outswinging, Werner wins it at the far post, but doesn’t threaten the goal.

11min: Werner drops a shoulder and beats his man to the byline, but the cross is straight into the gloves of Darlow.

9min: Newcastle look for Gayle over the top, but Kepa’s quick off his line to gather in the corner of the penalty area.

7min: Werner dribbles into the box, but loses the ball. Alonso finds it and crosses, which is blocked for a corner. Mount takes, inswinging. It goes long, finding Alonso at the far post. His header is blocked for another corner. Mount takes this as well, from the other side. Azpilicueta gets to it at the near post and it looks goalbound, but Gayle heads off the line for another corner. Mount takes this one short, then gets it back from Hudson-Odoi. The left-footed cross finds Abraham at the far post, but he heads wide. Chances.

3min: Hudson-Odoi cuts inside, finding Kovačić, who swings it wide to Alonso. He takes a touch and powers one low at goal from a tight angle. Darlow’s down to save and hold on.

1min: Chelsea win the ball, but Kovačić’s pass is intercepted. Gayle’s taken out to prevent a counter. Early enough for no card.

KICK-OFF: The players are out, in the expected and usual colors. They take a knee, and then Newcastle get us underway.
