It’s back to Champions League action for Chelsea as we fly to Sweden to take on Malmö in the fourth game of the group phase. While things on the injury front have improved slightly the Blues are still without several key players — not that that should make a huge difference for this game. Well, at least on paper.
THE PEOPLE’S CHOICE
Formation and goalkeeper — the two constants in this team, though the WAGNH community did give a third of the vote to Kepa Arrizabalaga (33%), while only a tenth to an alternative formation in the form of the 3-5-2 (11%).
With Thiago Silva (26%) and Malang Sarr (29%) taking seats on the bench, the defense sees Antonio Rüdiger, Trevoh Chalobah and Andreas Christensen preferred to start. At wing-back, Ben Chilwell (34%) and Reece James (49%) get some well-deserved rest as Marcos Alonso and César Azpilicueta once again rotate into the side for the midweek fixture.
It’s Jorginho and Ruben Loftus-Cheek in the pivot while both Saúl Ñíguez (28%) and Ross Barkley (37%) continue to play second fiddle. Mateo Kovačić remains injured. N’Golo Kanté (32%) has also been ruled out in the meantime, though he wouldn’t have started anyway.
Chelsea’s attacking options remain depleted — even with the return of Christian Pulisic (18%) — as Romelu Lukaku, Timo Werner and Mason Mount are all out. So the community went with a combination of Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech and Callum Hudson-Odoi to get the job done. On paper, that shouldn’t be a problem.
Mendy (67%) | Rüdiger (65%), Christensen (80%), Chalobah (72%) | Alonso (65%), Jorginho (63%), Loftus-Cheek (80%), Azpilicueta (69%) | Hudson-Odoi (90%), Havertz (95%), Ziyech (62%)
