The first sign that something big was about to go down today was Chelsea players reportedly being told to not report to Cobham for training as usual this morning.
But of course life and football goes on even after another manager is sacked, and so the players — those in favor of the former manager and those against him, as per recent rumblings, as well — were back in training by the afternoon and beginning preparations for Wednesday night’s match against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Stamford Bridge.
Obviously, there was no Frank Lampard or Jody Morris anymore, so the training was evidently led by coaches Anthony Barry and Joe Edwards. Barry, a summer arrival from Wigan Athletic seems the most likely to be taking over on a brief interim basis until Thomas Tuchel is appointed and cleared. Edwards, a former Chelsea trainee and youth coach was promoted to Lampard’s coaching staff 18 months ago from the Academy ranks, will hopefully get to stay and continue this important link. Fitness coach Matt Birnie, another one who was promoted from the Academy at the start of Lampard’s tenure looks to have survived as well, for now.
Interesting times once again...
