Sheffield United promise to ‘take good care of’ Chelsea loanee Ethan Ampadu

After two seasons of barely playing, first at Chelsea then on loan at RB Leipzig, young Ethan Ampadu is in desperate need of consistent minutes. Sending him on loan to a Premier League club therefore is not exactly the most obvious or expected move. But that’s precisely what Chelsea have done, with the soon-to-be 20-year-old heading up north to Sheffield, to spend the next nine months as a Bladesman.

Sheffield United were the surprise package of last season, only fading towards the end during Project Restart to finish outside of the European places, just a couple points behind Arsenal, and a few more behind Wolves and Spurs. Their squad remains almost entirely unchanged outside of goalkeeper, which makes it even less apparent how Ampadu will fit in.

But manager Chris Wilder claims that he has a plan for the youngster, whom he’s been eyeing for a while.

“Ethan is an outstanding young player for Chelsea, and we’ve worked really hard to get his signature for the season.

“We need to thank Frank Lampard and the people at Chelsea for helping making this happen. We’ve got a good relationship with them and they know we’re going to take good care of him.

“It’s an important season for Ethan and playing in the Premier League for us is a good move for everyone. He brings a lot of qualities to the group and he’s someone we’ve tracked for two or three seasons.”

That sounds good. Hopefully Wilder stays true to his word — and Ampadu stays healthy — and everybody wins!
