Chelsea 6-0 Barnsley, Player Ratings: Havertz & Abraham off and running

1. KAI HAVERTZ (9.4)

Obviously, all these ratings must be viewed in the context of “just Barnsley”, but getting the highest individual rating for nine months, since Willian’s 9.6 against Spurs back in December, is not a bad way to silence the over-reactionary critics for Chelsea’s biggest summer signing (who isn’t actually the club record transfer, contrary to what the television says).

Seeing the understanding with Abraham bloom right in front of our eyes as the match went on was just bonus.

“Tammy is a very, very good striker. Our partnership on the pitch was very good. I am very thankful for the assists. It was our first game together, but I like him very much as a striker, and it was very good to play with him. He can hold the ball up, he is very fast and I hope we continue like that.”

2. TAMMY ABRAHAM (8.5)

And speaking of Tammy, here he is! Fantastic performance from the youngster as he begins his sophomore season at Chelsea. Can he build on the last year’s efforts, that is the big question. He’s certainly off to a great start, though he started last season well, too, before fading as the months progressed. But he looks bigger, stronger, and obviously showed great link-up with Havertz, and that’s all very promising.

In his post-match interview, Tammy told Chelsea TV that he and Kai had worked on some specific movements and strategies in training, including the second-man run behind, which gave Abraham the confidence to do try the dummy for Havertz’s first goal.

3. WILFREDO CABALLERO (8.0)

Big Willy coming up big on several occasions on this one as Barnsley certainly weren’t shy to press and attack in numbers and take plenty of shots. Clean sheet!
