Tottenham Hotspur’s Carabao Cup third round match at Leyton Orient was called off just two hours prior to kick-off today after a “number” of Orient players tested positive for COVID-19.
Those tests, reportedly paid for by Tottenham, were conducted after the League Two side’s match on Saturday. They had been trying to postpone the match — thus the last-minute announcement of the cancelation — but given the extremely congested schedule for both Spurs and the competition itself (practically a round every midweek, including the fourth round coming up next week), that was never going to be likely.
While not officially announced yet, Spurs are thus expected to receive a bye into the next round, where they will take on either Chelsea or Barnsley next Tuesday. We are set to play the second division side tomorrow, and presumably have also paid for a round of testing to be done for them since the EFL no longer mandates weekly testing for Football League clubs.
