90+6min: FULL TIME. 1-1.

90+5min: McCormick and Vale almost combine, but Vale takes one touch too many in the area and he’s crowded out. Should’ve taken the shot early, the 16-year-old!

90+4min: Castillo on as Giroud walks off with a bandage on his head.

90+3min: Play is stopped as Giroud has stayed down after an elbow to the head from Duffy as they both went for the loose ball.

90+2min: Great reverse ball from Gallagher finds Giroud, but from a tight angle his effort is blocked for a corner. Gallagher takes that as well; Brighton scramble clear.

90min: Goal. Brighton. Caballero goes the correct way, but Gross’s effort is right in the corner, low. Unsaveable. 1-1.

89min: Brighton pressing for an equalizer. Ampadu gives away a penalty.

88min: Ampadu called for an obvious foul after grabbing his opposite number with both hands. Brighton chip in the centrally positioned free kick; Duffy wins the header but its harmlessly over the goal.

86min: Chelsea play with fire in trying to play out, but Baker, Ampadu, and Azpilicueta just about get away with it.

82min: Chelsea almost in after good work from Gallagher and Ampadu in midfield, but Lamptey’s recovery speed prevents any danger for Brighton.

79min: Stretcher’s on for the goalkeeper Walton, whose right leg is now in an air-cast. Unfortunate scenes.

76min: McCormick wins a corner after nice through ball from Maatsen. Gallagher takes, goalkeeper catches, but lands very awkwardly. Physios on immediately, checking his ankle.

74min: Gallagher’s pressing forces the goalkeeper into an error, which Chelsea almost manage to capitalize on. Vale’s bouncing shot is headed off the line by Duffy for Brighton.

73min: More good work from Gallagher in pressing, but Brighton maintain most of the possession.

70min: Stephens down for Brighton with an apparent head injury after an inadvertent collision with a Chelsea player. His day is done as a precaution, just as it should be.

68min: Azpilicueta pushes Connolly over in a good shooting position for Brighton. Gross’ effort looks bound for the top corner, but it somehow sails wide, seemingly through the net. Close!

63min: Rudiger almost gives away another penalty. Referee lets play go on.

60min: Gallagher working hard to win the ball for Chelsea, which cues mass changes from either side. Giroud, Ampadu, Baker on, Werner, Kante, Kovacic off.

57min: Brighton win a free kick in the left channel. Inswinger beats the defense and Caballero as well, who comes out but gets nowhere close to the ball. The header from Brighton fortunately hits the top of the bar and goes over.

55min: James defends well on March near the touchline; the two then get into a bit of a shoving match, but are quickly separated. Bit silly.

54min: Gallagher, wearing No.10, on for Ziyech.

53min: Werner tries to break past the line, gets pulled back and walks away slowly. Ziyech takes the free kick, wide, then sits down. Seems to be injured after all. So that’s not good.

51min: Ziyech misses a header near the touchline and appears to go down injured after landing a bit awkwardly. Play goes on as Chelsea defend well then turn upfield before a Kovacic foul stops play. Ziyech comes back on, no worse for the wear hopefully.

48min: Brighton have a corner. In it comes, the referee whistles and calls Rudiger for a foul.

SECOND HALF: Caballero, Azpilicueta, Rudiger on for Kepa, Christensen, and JCS. Ex-Chelsea kid Tariq Lamptey on for Brighton, among other changes.

45min: HALF TIME. No added-on time. Mostly good from Chelsea so far, who lead 1-0 and largely in control.

44min: Kante pinches the ball and finds Ziyech, who looks long towards Werner. He collects but drifts wide and can’t get past his man. Alonso collects the loose ball, finding Kovacic. He goes for a little jaunt, skipping past two and playing a 1-2 in the area with Kante. Goalkeeper’s on the return ball like a flash unfortunately, and the chance is gone.

43min: Chelsea pass it around for a while, before RLC tries an ambitious ball towards Ziyech that’s cut out. CHO then called for a foul while trying to win it back. Brighton offside as they turn to attack

38min: Chelsea move the ball well left-to-right, finding James for a low cross. RLC and Werner get in each other’s way and a Brighton defender can get a foot in to clear.

36min: Ziyech called for a foul, much to his frustration. Alonso and Kovacic combine to stop Brighton’s foray down their right.

35min: Bissouma goes for a 35-yard effort. Not close.

34min: Alonso into the book for a foul in midfield.

33min: Christensen well positioned to cut out a long ball towards Maupay. Chelsea in control with possession, though not too much threat overall, despite a fairly fluid front three. Ziyech offside on a run.

30min: Ziyech pulling strings, finding CHO wide left. He cuts inside into space and leathers one at goal. Ryan blocks for a corner, which Ziyech takes. Brighton clear, but Ziyech collects and puts in another cross. Brighton half-clear; Chelsea maintain possession.

27min: Trossard falls over in the penalty area after a ball over the top, he claims penalty against JCS, referee unmoved. Wasn’t much in it, if anything.

26min: Chelsea free kick. Ziyech swings it in from the left, finding Werner all alone, but he can’t quite get over the top of the ball and his header goes high and wide.

24min: Alonso looks for CHO making the inside-out run, but the pass is overhit.

23min: Brighton pushing again on the left, but Kante and Christensen combine well to stop them. RLC can start a counter, but Chelsea turn back and slow things down instead.

22min: Good defending from Christensen stops Brighton from building down the left. But Brighton come again and combine well in the left channel. Defense buckles, but the ball’s eventually cleared. Brighton come again, and a cross finds Trossard all alone but he goes for a tight-angle first-time shot, which he gets all wrong.

19min: Chelsea pass it around for a while but make no inroads, eventually giving it away on the left.

17min: Hudson-Odoi takes on two, beats the first but not the second. Clean tackle in the corner of the area. Chelsea maintain possession.

16min: James goes long, looking for CHO. Werner picks up the loose ball and Chelsea set up shop in the final third, eventually working space for a James cross. But he overhits it and is over the head of everyone.

15min: Brighton’s latest cross comes from the left. JCS heads clear.

11min: Ziyech gets a shot in, takes a slight deflection, which makes it easy for the goalkeeper to collect.

9min: Chelsea try to play out but Kovacic loses the ball. Brighton play across to the left, while March works space for a shot, which goes well wide.

8min: Alonso clears for a corner as Brighton push again. In that comes from March, Chelsea head clear this time. Brighton put in a second ball, which Kepa collects.

6min: Ziyech gives a foul away on the left. Free kick comes in, Dunk wins the header in between Christensen and JCS, but puts it over the bar.

4min: GOALLLL!!! WERNER!!!! Ziyech with a fantastic ball in from the right, finding Hudson-Odoi in the area, all alone. Hudson-Odoi gets his header all wrong, but it falls to the feet of Werner, who slides it home. 1-0, CHELSEA!

2min: Brighton answer with a long ball down the right, which is covered by Clarke-Salter. From the throw, Trossard works a cross, which is over the head of everybody and Chelsea can collect.

1min: Long ball to Hudson-Odoi, he plays across to Kante who finds James, who goes for goal from the corner of the penalty area. Just flashes wide.

KICK-OFF: Chelsea in all blue, Brighton in ... yellow? ... and off we go! The teams take a knee, and Chelsea get things started with Loftus-Cheek rolling the ball back.

It’s a friendly, the first of the preseason, and it’s also a test event, the first of its kind allowing (a small percentage of) fans back in the stadium for the first time since lockdowns began in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There will be 2500 fans in the stands today, and many more watching as a couple of Chelsea’s new arrivals pull on the Blue shirt for the first time.

Here we go!

Looks like Werner’s got Pedro’s old No.11 and Ziyech’s got Pulisic’s No.22, which should mean that Pulisic now has Willian’s old No.10, but preseason numbers are never official.
