On the very last possible day to do so, Chelsea have managed to convince both Pedro and Willian to sign short-term extensions, allowing them to stay with and play for the club beyond June 30 and through to the end of the season in late July.
Both Matt Law of the Telegraph and Nizaar Kinsella of Goal are reporting the good news. Today, June 23, was the last day for agreeing these short-term deals with players whose contracts were otherwise expiring at the end of the month.
Neither Willian nor Pedro look likely to sign an actual contract extensions with the club — and Pedro has reportedly already agreed to sign with AS Roma after the season — but Frank Lampard will now be able to call on the experienced duo as we attempt to finish in the top four (or top five, if Manchester City’s UEFA ban is upheld) this season.
On top of that, we are still in the FA Cup as well, which represents the only real opportunity to earn some silverware this season. It’s unclear if Willian and Pedro would still be around by the time we get to play the second leg against Bayern Munich in the Champions League Round of 16 in August.
All in all, great news. Project Restart has already shown that injuries will be commonplace and only those teams who have good depth will be able to finish this season on a high note.
Chelsea agree short-term contracts with Willian and Pedro, meaning Lampard will be able to call on the midfielders until the end of the season.
