Pulisic: I was asked ‘to go in and help us win the game, really nothing special’

Frank Lampard’s substitution on the 55th minute changed the game for Chelsea. Down a goal to Aston Villa at Villa Park, Christian Pulisic and Ross Barkley were introduced to the match.

The young American made an instant impact, scoring the equalizer within five minutes of his arrival.

Today’s appearance marked Pulisic’s first for Chelsea since New Year’s Day, when he picked up an adductor injury. It’s been well over five months since Pulisic saw first-team action, and the 21-year-old did not disappoint.

Pulisic has a penchant for making well-timed runs into the box, and today he put himself in position to meet César Azpilicueta’s cross at the far post.

“Yea, I’ve definitely been out for a while. It’s really nice to be back out here, especially for me with the injury. Obviously all the guys have been off and we’ve been trying to stay fit as best we can. And now, we have to get back into the rhythm of things.”

“I’m really happy I was able to come on and help the team in any way I could. Luckily today it was with a goal and obviously it helped us get a good result. The manager just asked me to go in and help us win the game, really nothing special. Just to go in, use my talents, and do what I can do. I’m happy I was able to do that.”

“I don’t think I hit it perfect with my left. Luckily I got enough on it just to steer it on target.”

The three points puts Chelsea in great position to finish the season in the top four, though that won’t be easy. Should we be able to do so, there would certainly be exciting times ahead with the incoming arrivals of Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner for next season as well.

Pulisic was asked about his thoughts about what Chelsea are building and, like the rest of, his excitement is palpable.

“We already have a really strong team with very good players. To add guys like that is incredible. We’re focused on this season right now but we’re also excited for what’s to come.”
