Timo Werner officially became Chelsea’s latest signing earlier today, and there was much rejoicing especially as it looks like Director Granovskaia managed to get the deal done at a slight discount, at just 50m. If Werner can reproduce his form from the past four years at RB Leipzig (93 goals in 157 appearances in all competitions), that will be an absolute bargain.
“We are very excited that Timo Werner has chosen to join Chelsea. He is a player who was coveted all over Europe and it is no surprise, he has that rare mix of being young and exciting and yet established and proven.”

Because of the unique situation created by the COVID-19 pandemic, Werner’s announcement was not accompanied by the usual in-person interviews and pictures of him holding up the Chelsea shirt at Stamford Bridge. It may be the middle of June, but we’re still playing league football — in fact, Chelsea haven’t even restarted our season yet and will only do so this weekend. Werner will not be joining officially until late July at the earliest, when the Premier League’s transfer window is expected to open.
But the deed is done and there is plenty of excitement, including from Werner himself, who posted a short video on Twitter to say hi in English.

As part of the official announcement, there was also a standard “proud to join club” quote from the 24-year-old, which ended in a salivating promise of a “very successful future” together. Make it so!
“I am delighted to be signing for Chelsea, it is a very proud moment for me to be joining this great club. I of course want to thank RB Leipzig, the club and the fans, for four fantastic years. You will forever be in my heart. I look forward to next season with my new team-mates, my new manager and of course the Chelsea fans. Together we have a very successful future ahead of us.”

Of course, as any classy player would, Werner posted a lovely goodbye message to his current team, RB Leipzig and their fans, thanking them for their support and love over the past four years.
