Cesc Fàbregas explains the story of gifting a junkyard Range Rover to Willy Caballero

Marcin BUlka

It’s a story of hubris. It’s a story of friendship and camaraderie. It’s a story of rich people jokes. It’s a cautionary tale. It’s an innocent prank. It’s an anti-gambling PSA. It’s a story of Cesc being Cesc. It’s a story of a broken down Range Rover. It’s a story that has made national headlines in the last few hours, because there is no other football #content.

A few weeks ago, back when we had football and laughter and anger and social contact, former Chelsea goalkeeping prospect Marcin Bułka sat down for an interview with a Polish YouTube channel, in which he dished the dirt on several Chelsea players — here is a translated version courtesy of /r/soccer.

One of the stories he told was of Cesc Fàbregas gifting a luxury Range Rover SUV to backup goalkeeper Willy Caballero after a training ground bet.

“One time in training [Fàbregas] said to a keeper: ‘If you save my pen I give you one of my two cars tomorrow’. He didn’t save it, but another time he made the same bet with Willy Caballero.

“He said ‘If you save my pen, I buy you a Range Rover’. Willy actually saved it. Next day there is a Range Rover on the parking lot, probably from the 90s. All windows broken, door is falling off, mirror is gone. And then he says to Willy: ‘There’s your Range Rover’.”

Turns out, there may have been some embellishment to Bułka’s story.

Cesc, who is extra bored these days, decided to post the actual video of the prank since the cat was out of the bag anyway.

And while the Range is indeed one from the junkyard bought for less than £1000, it sure appears to be in better cosmetic condition than in the original story. Oh no a cracked windshield!

Here’s Cesc’s version:

“So, after a player already told the story to the press of what happened one day in 2018 and many people asked me if it’s true, there we go.

“Many times for many years after training, I stay a little bit longer to take some penalties. I always made little bets with the goalkeepers to put a bit of spice into the challenge. For some reason, I never really missed one.

“So one day i got too confident and it got a [bit] of out of hand. It was Willy Caballero’s turn and I told him that if he saved it I’d get him a Range Rover. Unfortunately for me, he saved it in front of the whole team so you can imagine how it went... I went from feeling the most confident, to feeling the most stupid guy on earth . Everybody obviously was shouting and laughing that I had to pay my debt.

“I went to a scrapyard and I found a destroyed Range Rover that couldn’t be used at all for £950 so I said, you know what? I’ll get that. The next day they brought it to the training ground and well... I’ll show you the rest on a video.

“The lesson of the story is: Don’t bet at all at any cost.”

That’s right, kids, don’t gamble!

But maybe a little wrenching could get this beast back in running order in no time! Maybe a hobby for Willy C for the next few weeks?
