WE AIN’T GOT NO FOOTBALL: Aston Villa vs. Chelsea: Fans’ choice starting XI

New, comments

Aston Villa vs. Chelsea will not take place this weekend in the real world; but in the virtual one...

Chelsea would’ve kicked off against Aston Villa in a few hours, were it not for the stoppage of play and the shutdown of practically all sports in Europe and North America due to the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak.

If and when football, and sports in general, may return, no one really knows. The hope is that it will be in a month. The reality may be a lot harsher than that. As Eden Hazard used to like to say, “we’ll see”.

I have no idea what we’ll do until then, but let’s just finish off this exercise in normalcy first. Y’all have voted, here’s what the results of the vote were.

So, here’s the state of the community’s preferences as we head into the coronavirus break.

THE PEOPLE’S CHOICE

After last weekend’s 4-0 excellence against Everton (hey, remember that?), the 4-3-3 is the WAGNH community’s choice of formation, with neither the 4-2-3-1 (21%) nor the 3-4-3 (15%) making much of an impact

Not much doubt who the preferred goalkeeper is now that Kepa Arrizabalaga rediscovered himself (just in time for the stoppage), but if the community had their way, Chelsea would’ve been lining up with a center back pairing of Antonio Rüdiger and César Azpilicueta. Andreas Christensen (44%) and Kurt Zouma (53%) took votes away from each other and thus neither would’ve earned enough to start. Neither Fikayo Tomori (20%) and especially not Emerson (5%) came close to earning a spot either, with Marcos Alonso and Reece James keeping the wide defensive positions on lockdown.

Given the current midfield injuries and suspensions — the only benefit of the extended break is that Chelsea might yet resume play this season with a healthier squad — Billy Gilmour, Ross Barkley, and Mason Mount would’ve kept their places from last weekend. Will Ruben Loftus-Cheek (13%) get to play this season at all?

The same situation would’ve played out in attack, with the veteran expiring-contract trio of Willian, Pedro, and Olivier Giroud getting the call again. Will we get to see them play for Chelsea again? Who knows!

4-3-3 (61%):
Arrizabalaga (98%) | Alonso (80%), Rüdiger (85%), Azpilicueta (77%), James (69%) | Barkley (94%), Gilmour (99%), Mount (62%) | Willian (94%), Giroud (98%), Pedro (88%)

Alas, we won’t get to see this XI or any other XI in action this weekend.

Maybe we’ll plug it into FM20 and see what falls out?
