On Tuesday, the State of Bavaria put into official effect a ban on all “large-scale events” (1000+ spectators) until April 19 to help try to prevent the spread of COVID-19 as much as possible, and that includes Chelsea’s match at the Allianz Arena next Wednesday, March 18.
This was rumored to be the likely outcome as the coronavirus continues to spread across Europe and the world. Bavaria’s example has already been followed by North-Rhine Westphalia as well, while Bayern’s match against Union Berlin this weekend will also be played behind closed doors.
Basically, it sounds like the Bundesliga will soon move all games behind closed doors, and it wouldn’t be surprise if the rest of Europe slowly followed as well.
As far as Chelsea’s trip to Munich — in which the Blues would need to overturn a 3-0 first-leg deficit to advance — Bayern are refunding all tickets, while hopefully any travel arrangements that may have been made will also be similarly cancelable or adjustable for free.
All that said, we’re still likely just at the start of this outbreak, and more preventative measures will surely follow.
Our @ChampionsLeague game against @ChelseaFC will take place behind closed doors.
